In the tapestry of life, some individuals stand out as path breakers and change makers, carving a niche for themselves and influencing the world around them. One such extraordinary figure is Jija Harisingh, whose journey exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a profound commitment to social transformation. She is a trailblazer, challenging societal norms and embracing growth at every turn.

Unveiling a career Unconventionally Chosen: The Indian Police Force

Jija Harisingh embarked on her journey in an era where certain career choices were deemed unconventional for women. Raised in a well-off family, she chose a path less travelled- entering the male-dominated realm of law enforcement. Her decision to join the police force, despite societal expectations, speaks volumes about her resilience and determination.

As the first woman IPS officer from South India, Jija Harisingh broke through gender stereotypes, establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with. Her journey not only shattered glass ceilings but also became an inspiration for aspiring women in law enforcement.

Jija: A Beacon of Effervescence in the Face of Challenge

Jija Harisingh’s effervescent nature was a vibrant undercurrent that coloured her journey into the police force. Even in the face of consternation and the demanding rigours of training, her spirit remained buoyant. Her inner cheekiness, a playful spark that refuses to be extinguished, hints at a resilient optimism that characterizes her approach to challenges. This effervescence wasn’t just a fleeting emotion, it became a constant companion, infusing her experiences with lively energy. Till today, it remains a defining aspect of her character, and people who meet her are taken in by the childlike candour and humour that bubbles from within.

Jija’s Grit: Forging Strength in the Crucible of Police Training

While Jija easily entered the Indian Police Service, the training was, in her words,” too tough”. Being the only woman among a sea of men, Jija found herself in a unique position. The training, described as one year of very gruelling exercise with no concessions, demanded her utmost resilience. The absence of other women colleagues highlighted her isolated position, yet she faced the situation with determination. The academy, with its metaphorical tunnel of darkness, filth, and sharp stones, became a transformative experience that tested not only her physical abilities but also her mental fortitude.

Empowering Women Within and Beyond the Force:

As a woman in a position of authority, Jija Harisingh extended her influence beyond official duties, becoming a catalyst for change. Managing over 450 state personnel, she transformed the police force into an inviting career choice for women. Her impact resonated not only within the force but also in the broader societal perception of women’s role in law enforcement.

Reflecting on her journey, Jija Harisingh emphasizes the shift in parental attitudes towards allowing their daughters to join the police force. Her story is not just about her own achievements but also about paving the way for future generations of women to pursue their aspirations unabashedly.

A Global Impact:

Jija Harisingh’s influence transcends national boundaries. From encounters in London during the World Tourism Meet to inspiring a career shift in an individual from her grandmother’s village in Kerala, her story has motivated people worldwide. Her journey demonstrates that inspiration knows no geographical bounds and can spark change across diverse cultures.

Retirement: A Prelude to Unbridled Growth:

Jija Harisingh retired from her illustrious career in 2011 after serving in top positions in the Indian Police Force. But her retirement only marked the beginning of a new chapter rather than a conclusion. Despite suggestions to slow down, she chose to embrace her newfound freedom with unwavering enthusiasm. Rejecting the conventional notion of retirement, she decided to live life on her terms, revelling in her passions and dedicating her time to causes close to her heart.

Passion for Art, Cultural Expression and serving the underprivileged:

Beyond her contributions to law enforcement, Jija Harisingh is a passionate advocate for art and cultural expression. Her journey into the world of art began at an early age and she wished to study art in Shantiniketan. However, her father’s untimely death led her to take up a teaching position in college where she taught Romantic poets and Shakespeare to Undergraduate and graduate students.

A deeper exploration into her artistic pursuits led her to Australia for a course on art and patronage. The inception of Art Mantram, an organization dedicated to celebrating various forms of art, marks her commitment to nurturing creativity in society.

Through Art Mantram, Jija Harisingh curates shows, supports struggling artists, and endeavours to integrate art into everyday life. Her efforts to create an art village and the Glasshouse Festival of Poetry showcase her vision for a society where art is not just a form of expression but an integral part of collective consciousness.

Jija Harisingh continues working, contributing to humanity, and focussing on activities that bring her satisfaction. Her passion for tribal livelihood programmes and dedication to the underprivileged demonstrates her commitment to creating a positive impact in her post-retirement phase.

Age as a catalyst for Continued Growth: Her message on Women’s Day

Encouraging others not to be defined by their years, she stresses the importance of pursuing activities that bring joy and satisfaction. Emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle through mindful eating, regular exercise, yoga, and meditation, she dismantles societal stereotypes about aging.
